Marine Conservation Program

This program aims to implement research, create monitoring programs, analyze information and develop a solid database of the Gulf of Aqaba.

It is led by a qualified and well-trained team that can design surveys, conduct field work and also develop recommendations that will provide clear guidance to the management authorities, private sector and community- based organizations at the Gulf of Aqaba specifically, and Jordan’s institutions in general. So far, the program has succeeded in establishing several research and monitoring programs that support decision makers in adopting best solutions in order to conserve the ecological integrity of ecosystems, habitats and species. In addition, the program served its purpose in raising knowledge and awareness about Aqaba, and a comprehensive database is now being established with scientific reports and articles published in peer-reviewed journals.

Outreach & Advocacy Program

The aim of this program is to foster a culture of marine conservation in Jordanian society, and ultimately to influence decision makers through well-structured advocacy campaigns to act positively toward marine conservation in Aqaba.

To succeed, JREDS coordinates closely with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) to maintain focus on ongoing marine environment issues. In addition, JREDS works with the private and public sectors in order to promote environmentally sound initiatives, and introduce new approaches such as deterrent penalties for polluters. JREDS is confident that its public education and outreach programs are establishing a good foundation for success and that our community will support the enforcement of regulations to maintain a sustainable and healthy marine environment.

Sustainable Development Program

The Sustainable Development program aims to improve economic vitality, environmental resilience, and quality of life through the global ecosystem. The Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan (JREDS) achieves this goal through its role as the National Operator for the Foundation for Environmental Education since 2008 and implementing three programs & Eco Labels of FEE, Green Key, Blue Flag and Eco-Schools. The FEE provides a sustainable world in which education creates positive change for all, empowering youth to create an environmentally conscious world and promotion of sustainable business practices and the protection of our valuable natural resources. The FEE program is recognized by UNESCO and UNEP and addresses the UN “Sustainable Development Goals”.

Originally, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) program in Jordan was initiated in 2007, by the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) after a consultation effort to introduce an international eco-labeling certificate for tourism to market Aqaba as green destination in Jordan. ASZEA initially supported JREDS in being accredited as the National Operator and since then has worked closely with JREDS to ensure that environmental and sustainable business practices are adopted in Aqaba.
